Sumba Omega Bracelet

Description

Handmade silver bracelet, high quality craftsmanship with a one of a kind closure inspired in the traditional Omega shape from Sumba Island. Even though a basic Omega shape is endemic to all of Southeast Asia, the greatest variety regarding form and dimension has been found in Indonesia. Ritual earrings or pendants called mamuli are one of the most archaic forms in Indonesian Jewellery. Most of them –such as the one used as inspiration for this piece- are originally from Sumba. The oldest ones can be traced back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age. The mamuli have evolved and changed slightly over the centuries: The earliest were of a simple diamond shape with a round hole in the centre from which a thin line extended down to the bottom. Later on, mamuli with increasingly exuberant endings were found, richly decorated using granulation techniques and metal filaments. In the 18^th century, wealth increased and taste for aesthetics changed. The extensions at the bottom of the mamuli became larger.
