Description
Inspired by the historic Coptic crosses of Ethiopia, this handcrafted pendant combines intricate symbolism with remarkable craftsmanship. Its articulated construction allows the individual sections of the cross to move freely, creating a dynamic piece that feels alive when worn. The finely pierced openwork design reflects the rich artistic traditions of the Ethiopian Highlands and the enduring legacy of their ceremonial crosses.
In the remote highlands of Ethiopia, the Habesha Christians have lived for over 1000 years isolated from the world. Throughout these centuries, religion has been central to their culture. Its origins can be traced back to Coptic Christians from Egypt who came to Ethiopia in the 4th century.
The cross has always been a symbol of great significance. Latin and Greek crosses, characterised by simple and clear lines, were enriched by Coptic designs. These are generally more complex and feature intricate protuberances on the sides. To this day, Christian Habesha wear crosses around their necks, often on a dark cotton thread, called mateb.
The pendant is also reversible, with subtle differences on each side that offer two distinct ways to wear it. Carefully handmade by skilled artisans, every piece carries slight variations in shape and finish, making each cross entirely unique and a true expression of traditional craftsmanship.
