In the remote highlands of Ethiopia, the Habesha Christians have lived for over 1,000 years in relative isolation. Throughout these centuries, religion has remained at the heart of their culture. The origins of Ethiopian Christianity can be traced back to Coptic Christians from Egypt who arrived in Ethiopia during the 4th century.
The cross has always been a symbol of profound significance. The simple forms of the Latin and Greek crosses gradually evolved into the more intricate Coptic designs, characterised by complex openwork patterns and elaborate decorative elements. To this day, many Christian Habesha continue to wear crosses around their necks, often suspended from a dark cotton thread known as a mateb.
