Inspiration: The vigorous and massive sculptures of the Batak Toba are evidence of their high spiritual awareness. Topped with the Singa Head,-a mix of Lion, Naga Dragon and Elephant-, the batak toba jewellery pieces constitute a status symbol as well as an amulet. The word Singa is sanskrit for lion and also the name of the Mythical protective creature. On occasions, it is also described as part human, part water buffalo and part lizard- the latter often appearing on the top of the fabulous head-. The batak toba believe that the smith’s tools are magically charged. This has always made both of them -smiths and tools- objects of fear and great respect. In fact, the batak toba smith thinks that his tools have a soul. He slaughters a chicken or a piglet before he begins his work in order to offer something to the tools as a sign of reverence
