Description
The Batak Karo Pendant with Tanzanite draws its inspiration from the ethnic group of the same name, residing in the western part of Sumatra, the largest island of the Indonesian archipelago. This pendant is inspired by the Kudung-Kudung earrings worn by women, always shaped like a teardrop.
This one-of-a-kind pendant is adorned with a tanzanite that enhances its beautiful design. The piece is fully articulated, allowing it to be worn on both sides for versatility and style.
The Batak Karo ethnic group resides in the western part of Sumatra, the largest island among the more than 12,000 that make up the Indonesian archipelago. The Karo smiths, known as Pande, are among the most skilled gold- and silversmiths of the Batak tribes. This particular Batak pendant, shaped like a teardrop, bears resemblance to the classic Kudung-Kudung earrings they craft.
The Kudung-Kudung earrings are worn exclusively by girls and women during festive occasions. Only during these special events do they retrieve them from their hidden jewelry storage. A design known as Gelang Sarung adorns the upper loop of the pendant. It resembles the Sarong, a textile fabric worn by women to cover their legs.
The Gelang Sarung motif is quite common in Karo jewelry, often associated with protective properties.
