Description
Oritos are our most traditional Indonesian jewelry inspiration. The amount of detail—handcrafted filaments, each being handmade from scratch, each different. Tiny silver spheres that vary in size and placement in each of our creations are what make this piece one to wear and treasure. Let’s not forget about the inside; the carved details shaping “S”s and attention to detail are what we stand out for.
“S” shaped spirals, intertwined metal filaments, and small spheres of different sizes are among the most typical elements of traditional jewelry from the Indonesian archipelago. Huge silver bracelets—rarely gold ones—were worn by both Tetum men and women living in Indonesian West Timor. The Tetum people used their jewelry not only for body adornment but also as artifacts and even as musical instruments during special festivities.
When members of Magellan’s fleet visited Timor in 1505, sent to investigate rumors of vast gold mines, the island was already part of a growing international trade network and a key source of sandalwood for China.
In Bali, jewelry tends to be elaborated in smaller sizes. Designs with up to a hundred different patterns are meticulously composed. Specializing in applying small spheres and fine wires by hand, these silver and gold rings have become classics among Balinese jewelry.
Measure: The width of the ring is 9mm.
