Total length is 70mm and 40mm width. In the remote highlands of Ethiopia, the Habesha Christians have lived for over 1000 years isolated from the world. Throughout these centuries, religion has been central to their culture. Its origins can be traced back to Coptic Christians from Egypt who came to Ethiopia in the 4th century. The cross has always been a symbol of great significance. Latin and Greek crosses, characterised by simple and clear lines, were enriched by Coptic designs. These are generally more complex and feature intricate protuberances on the sides. To this day, Christian Habesha wear crosses around their necks, often on a dark cotton thread, called mateb.
