Inspiration: A violent eruption of the Toba Volcano around 75000 years ago created the Lake Toba whose surroundings constitute the home of the Batak people. Despite their geographical proximity, the Batak are not an homogeneous group, and their culture is not uniform. There is however something they have in common: Jewellery is deeply meaningful for all of them. It is a sacred inheritance the Pusaka. The most valuable pieces are worn only during major clan celebrations. While not in use they are hidden in the main house or buried in a secret spot. Detailed and symmetric granulation is often used on massive gold bracelets. For Men the bolder and heavier pieces; for Women the lighter, thinner and simpler. The aristocracy of the Batak Karo ethnic wears this kind of bracelets on special occasions such as their marriages or their parents’ funeral.
